Necklace in 18K (750) gold, adorned with a cross badine and its runner entirely set with rose-cut garnets. French work of the 19th century. Dimensions: 6.5x5.5cm and 5x3cm respectively. Gross weight: 31.6g
The cross badine set with garnets is typical of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. M. Fieggen (Les bijoux des Français, 2021, p. 102) explains that the term "badiner" in the 19th century meant "to flutter" or move freely. The color and brilliance of garnets was enhanced by the addition of red-tinted straw. Garnet deposits had been mined in the Catalan region since Napoleon III.
