The link between a drawing and a glass plate by Théodore Rousseau is rare enough not to mention. This is the case here between the pen-and-ink drawing enhanced with watercolor and the glass plate Le Cerisier de la Plante-à-Biau, a copy of which exists in the National Gallery, Washington (see : Michel Schulman, Théodore Rousseau, catalog raisonné de l'œuvre graphique, 1997, no. 757, repr. p. 344), which allows us to give the same name to our pen-and-ink drawing.
Executed in 1862, this pen-and-ink drawing takes up the cliché-verre while adding a highly free, modern interpretation, in the way that Rousseau knew how to mark his drawings of the period. The blue watercolor highlights, scattered here and there, demonstrate the sensibility of this talented artist.
