MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT - Lot 35
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT Hector BERLIOZ (1803-1869). L.A.S., Vienna November 16, 1845, to Armand Bertin at Journal des Débats; 2pages in-4 (2 small traces of scotch tape). On the success of his concerts in Vienna. He asks him to announce to readers his "first success in Vienna. The 1st concert took place today, the theater was full and we did all we could do (4000fr). [...] In the absence of a patron, I presented myself alone to the Prince of Metternich, who gave me a warm welcome; yesterday I saw the Minister of the Interior, who also received me as a very warm and enlightened music lover". He attended the great musical festival at the carousel, which made a strong impression on him. "My second concert will be next Sunday, and I'll be off to Pesth or Prague". He praises the orchestra, which "managed with admirable verve and precision to overcome all these difficulties, so unexpected for them; the chorus also performed extremely well. As for Staudigl [bass Josef Staudigl], this man is music itself, and his voice is of incomparable beauty; I didn't know enough English [...] to thank and compliment him, but he must have understood that I was really extraordinarily satisfied, content and grateful"...
