CHRESTIENNE DE FRANCE. P.S., Turin [early 1645]; countersign - Lot 202
CHRESTIENNE DE FRANCE. P.S., Turin [early 1645]; countersigned by the Marquis of San Tommaso; small 27-page folio, with seal of arms under paper (one corner a little gnawed at bottom of last 3 ff. without loss of text, slight wetness); in Italian.
Important diplomatic instructions for his ambassador in Rome after the election of Innocent X (September 15, 1644).
The document is entitled: "Instruttione a voi Conte Federico Aldobrandino San Georgio destinato nostro Ambasciatore a Roma", Federico Biandrate di San Giorgio Aldobrandini (†1655).
These instructions are very detailed. The ambassador must first express to the new Pope the joy and contentment of seeing him head of Christendom; the Regent hopes for both public and private benefits from this happy election, and for the glory of God... She recommends that the Pope take part in the negotiations and talks being held in Munster for universal peace, supporting the interests of the Duke of Savoy and the restitution of the places in Piedmont. She recounts everything that happened during the government of her husband Victor-Amédée... Lastly, she recommends a profound interest in the question of ecclesiastical immunities, from which derive abuses and irreparable prejudice to the country and to ducal revenues; and she recalls all the privileges of the House of Savoy, obtained from a long series of Sovereign Pontiffs, insisting that nothing be changed during her Regency, to deny nothing of the graces deserved by the Princes of this House... Finally, she tells the ambassador how to behave with certain cardinals of the Roman Curia (Pamphili, Palotta, Colonna, Barberini...) and with the ambassadors of the Princes of Italy... Etc.
