Very important tapestry depicting an Old Testament setting, - Lot 97

Very important tapestry depicting an Old Testament setting, with Moses at the top of the composition holding his staff towards a tree surrounded by snakes. At the bottom, numerous figures are attacked by snakes and turn towards Moses. Brussels, late 16th century, early 17th century 230 x 370 cm Diminished around, repairs and wear. Lined. Attached braid all around. Very good color condition. This is the biblical episode of the Brazen Serpent (Numbers XXI 6-9); the Hebrews, tired of wandering in search of the Promised Land, had murmured against God, who punished them by sending them poisonous snakes. The people repented, and Moses, at Yahweh's command, erected a bronze snake atop a pole, and those who looked at it were saved from the snakes' bites.
