Very important wool and silk tapestry with country decor. On - Lot 142
Very important wool and silk tapestry with country decor. On the left, sheep and goats. On the right, two figures against a background of large trees and forests, with a village in the distance. Very large columned border decorated with putti and fruit. AERTS family mark in the right-hand braid. Metal threads in the characters. Brussels, 18th century. 337 x 515 cm Extensive repairs, cut on the right, lining. One piece on the right. Wear at bottom in particular. The mark visible on our tapestry is the mark of the AERTS family, a family of Brussels weavers found in archival documents between 1550 and 1707. Nicaise Aerts obtained a privilege in 1613, is mentioned in 1619 and died around 1627. His widow married Bernard van Brustom. As far as our tapestry is concerned, he is either the son or brother of Nicaise Aerts, who obtained a privilege in 1629, was dean of the guild between 1633 and 1635 and married the daughter of François van den Hecke; the date of his death is unknown.
