James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) - Lot 330
James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903)
Greenwich Park. 1859. Etching and drypoint. 201x126. Kennedy 35; Glasgow 41. Very fine proof on old azure laid paper. Annotations in pen and ink in lower margin: "Whistler/eau forte". Full margins. Rare (38 known proofs).
This subject, sometimes erroneously called Kensington Gardens, is one of the few pure landscapes engraved by the artist. It is the result of a hike made in the company of his brother-in-law Seymour Haden, with the aim of drawing on the motif.
