Door hanging, Egypt, 20th century - Lot 232
Door hanging, Egypt, 20th century
Beige cotton weave, sewn in two strips on the upper lintel, in four strips on the main piece with double jambs. The whole is decorated with a patchwork of colored cotton pieces forming vegetal, geometric and epigraphic motifs. On the upper lintel, beneath a frieze of merlons, a cartouche flanked by two rosettes reads a hadith in Thuluth Arabic. On the main room, the jambs alternate between epigraphic cartouches containing several verbs and names in Arabic, and medallions furnished with a pseudo-tugra. The jambs are joined by a lintel with double epigraphic cartouches separated by the religious formula "Ma Sha'a Allah" depicting a coffee pot beneath a frieze of mantling. These cartouches give a religious formula by Imam Ash-Shâfi'î.
Row of metal suspension rings sewn into the back of the lintel.
Dim. upper lintel: 184 x 74 cm; dim. main piece: 272 x 164 cm
Stains, a few holes and patches, some faded colors.
