Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) - Lot 41
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) A scholar in his study (formerly called "Faust", in reality: Doctor Fautrieus, Dutch philosopher). Circa 1652. Etching, drypoint and burin. 162 x 211. Bartsch 270; New Hollstein 270 (vi/vii). A very fine proof on thin early 19th-century laid paper, with numerous repeats in the subject, notably oblique cuts along the upper edge, from a print made by Basan, loaded with barbs in places, trimmed to the plate cut, window-mounted. Minor thinning visible through transparency. Two light freckles in the window. Fine trace of oblique fold in lower left corner.
