Jean-Émile Laboureur (1877-1943) - Lot 214

Jean-Émile Laboureur (1877-1943) Union républicaine des Etudiants rennais; inauguration session. (Program). 1903. Lithograph. 417 x 245. Laboureur 765. Trial proof on buff vellum with unbalanced margins, one of the few proofs without the typographed text on the verso. Pinholes in corners. Soiling on verso. Small tear at right edge. A very rare item. The young Breton in the background, in contrast to his forefather sitting in the foreground, crushed by the weight of tradition, chases a flock of crows as the majestic Republic, bearer of the promises that were to be embodied two years later in the separation of Church and State, advances. Provenance : Estate of the artist (annotations in pencil by Sylvain Laboureur, son of the artist, on the mount).
