[LAMBERT DE SAUMERY (Pierre). - Lot 32
[LAMBERT DE SAUMERY (Pierre).
Le Diable confondu, ou le sot Astaroth.
La Haye : Antoine van Dole, 1740 - In-12, red half-maroquin with corners, gilded fillets, spine ribbed and decorated, untrimmed (Bauzonnet).
Very rare first edition.
This pamphlet is attributed to M. Delile, first physician to the Prince-Bishop of Liège. In it, he reviews the work "Le Diable ermite, ou Aventures d'Astaroth banni des enfers. Ouvrage de fantaisie" by Pierre Lambert de Saumery, published in 1741, in which the latter ridiculed his benefactors in Liège. Delile explains in his preface why his work appeared before Lambert de Saumery's. The latter responded to this pamphlet with another libel entitled "Le Censeur impartial ou réflexions morales, critiques et comiques sur le diable hermite et le diable confondu".
A very fine copy bound by Bauzonnet, from the library of Count Henri de La Bédoyère.
