[REVUE] - GILL (André). - Lot 98
[REVUE] - GILL (André). L'Éclipse. Paris: Bureau du journal, January 26, 1868-June 25, 1876. - 2 volumes in-folio, half marbled basane, spine ribbed (modern binding). Famous political and satirical journal. Edited by François Polo, "L'Eclipse" is a continuation of "La Lune", published under the same editorship between 1865 and 1868. Illustrated mainly by André Gill, "L'Eclipse" suffered numerous setbacks, with censors not hesitating to put the brakes on the illustrator's ingenuity. This censorship greatly annoyed Gill, so much so that he felt his talent and security were threatened. Valmy-Baysse recalls that from October 4, 1868 to August 14, 1870, the administration banned no less than twenty-two issues of "L'Eclipse" (Valmy-Baysse, "Le roman d'un caricaturiste, André Gill", ed. 1927, p. 129). This censorship often reacted at the last moment, so a new cartoon had to be composed in a hurry. Recomposed copies usually bear the issue number followed by the letter "b" for bis. The cartoons depicted political figures as well as artistic and literary figures. In 1876, two years after François Polo's death, sales of the paper were running out of steam, and it was decided to reduce its format. Gill didn't like the idea, dreaming of large-scale compositions, and began a new adventure with "La Lune rousse", whose first issue appeared on December 10, 1876. Copy as follows: Volume 1: n° 1 to 139. Includes: no. 14 and 14 bis, 2 prints of no. 15 (Sainte-Beuve and Gustave Doré), no. 22 bis, no. 29 and 29 bis, no. 37 and 37 bis, no. 44 bis, no. 49 bis, no. 51 bis, no. 53 bis, no. 55 and 55 bis, no. 59 bis, no. 71 bis, no. 87 bis, n° 98 bis, n° 99 bis, n° 103 bis, n° 106 bis, n° 114 et 114 bis, n° 116 et 116 bis, n° 128 bis, n° 129 et 129 bis, 132 et 132 bis, n° 133 et 133 bis, n° 134 et 134 bis, 7 supplements by André Gill including one in duplicate. Volume 2: nos. 140 to 212 and 214 to 400, including supplement to no. 197. Almost complete copy, lacking only no. 213 and the first leaf of no. 4. Total 410 issues, the majority of which are back issues; also includes six rare supplements by André Gill and the supplement to no. 197. Issue no. 125 is numbered 126; it first appeared on June 11, 1870, numbered 125, and reappeared on June 16, numbered 126 as here. The first issue, no. 128, is actually no. 127, appearing with either issue. As is often the case, several censored issues are missing: no. 46 featuring Ténot, no. 92 featuring the "Conseil des Rats", no. 105 featuring "Troppmann", nos. 44, 49, 51, 53, 59, 71, 87, 98, 99, 103 and 106. On the other hand, censored numbers 151 and 156 can be found, but without their bis numbers. At the end of Volume 1 are the first issue of Gulliver, dated February 20, 1868, and Diogène no. 15, dated December 7, 1867. Spines faded, rubbed with use. The first leaf with the illustration of number 4 is missing. Number 140, opening the second volume, has been restored. Tears without missing on the second leaf of nos. 18 and 89, on the first leaf of nos. 90 and 116 and on the edges of nos. 122 and 137. Staining to the last few issues, causing slight damage to some issues.
