[BARTHES (Roland)]. Les Étudiants du groupe théâtral antique de la Sorbonne present Les Perses d'Eschyle. S.l., 1937. - In-8, stapled. Very rare program published for the May 3, 1936 performance in the Sorbonne courtyard of Aeschylus' play "Les Perses" by the students of the Sorbonne's ancient theater group, which included the young Roland Barthes, who played the role of Darios for the occasion. In 1975, he wrote: "Darios, whom I always played with the greatest stage fright, had two long tirades in which I was in constant danger of getting confused: I was fascinated by the temptation to think of something else. Through the tiny holes in my mask, I couldn't see anything, except far, far up; while I was spouting the dead king's prophecies, my gaze rested on inert, free objects, a window, a corbel, a patch of sky: they, at least, weren't afraid. I was angry at myself for having allowed myself to be caught in this uncomfortable trap - while my voice continued its even flow, resistant to the expressions I should have given it." This precious copy includes autograph dedications from 4 of the actors, including Roland Barthes, for whom this is one of the earliest known dedications: "After many bocks, I can only say thank you for your very touching welcome, and how much we hope and expect to see you again soon in Paris! R. Barthes". Vertical centerfold. Minor foxing.
