Provenance:
1. Manuscript copied in Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region, on stylistic bases. The eight historiated initials and six ornamented initials are in a style close to that of the so-called "primo stile", adopted in the Bolognese workshops of the late 13th and early 14th centuries, between Romanesque art and the new Gothic aesthetic. On this Bolognese "primo stile", see T. Kennedy (ed.), Medieval Bologna : Art for a University City, London, 2021.
From a liturgical point of view, the calendar of this Psalter includes a number of local saints honored in Bologna. Of particular note are: Procolus (01.06); Vital and Agricole of Bologna, Bologna's first two martyrs (04.11) [Chiesa dei Santi Vitale e Agricola in Arena; Church of St. Vitale-saint-Agricol in Bologna's Stefano complex]; Petronius of Bologna (04.10), patron saint of the city of Bologna, Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna; Stephen (01.01 and 26.12) [Basilica of Santo Stefano]; Stephen, pope (02.08); Venant, abbot (2 times: 11. 10; 23.10).
In the 13th and 14th centuries, Bologna was an intellectual center, home to Europe's oldest university: the city became Italy's leading center for manuscript production, with a thriving community of scribes, artists, scholars and booksellers.
2. France, private collection.
Text:
ff. 1-6v, Calendar, in Latin, red and brown ink (see above for the list of saints suggesting a Bolognese origin).
ff. 7-169, Festive Psalter (psalms 1 to 150), divided into eight parts according to the customary festive divisions (psalms 1, 26, 38, 52, 68, 80, 97, 109). It is common for festive psalters to include a cycle of eight miniatures or historiated initials. The "férial" psalter is divided into books corresponding to the recitation of the Divine Office. An ancient hand indicates in the upper margin the liturgical feasts concerned. An ancient numbering of the psalms in Arabic numerals has been added in the margins ("150" in the margin of fol. 169).
ff. 169-186v, Prayers and hymns, including "Confitebor tibi domine..." (fol. 169); Benedictus (ff. 179-181); Canticum sancte marie virginis (ff. 181-181v), "Magnificat anima mea dominum..." (Luke 1, 46-55); Nunc dimittis (ff. 181v-182); Pater noster; Credo; last prayer: "Quicumque vult salvus est..." Note that the headings (systematically "Psalmus David") seem to be partly erroneous from fol. 169v onwards.
