PANCIROLLI (Guido). Notitia utraque dignitatum, cum orientis tum occidentis, ultra arcadii honoriique tempora. Et in eam Guidi Pancirolli... commentarium. Ejusdem authoris de magistratibus municipalibus... Lyon: Jacques Du Creux for Jean de Gabiano, 1608. - 5 parts in one in-folio volume, 331 x 220: (16 ff.), 112 ff. last blank; ff. (113)-184; ff. (185)-208 (misflipped 222); 30 ff. ; ff. (31)-35 (misflipped 25), (13 ff.). Soft parchment, smooth spine (18th-century binding). Third edition of the Notitia dignitatum with commentaries by the Italian jurisconsult Guido Panciroli (1523-1599). This anonymous text, compiled between 390 and 425, is a reference work on the civil and military organization of the Roman Empire, both East and West, under the reigns of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius. The first printed edition was given by Alciat in 1552; Panciroli, who had been Alciat's pupil, proposed an annotated edition in 1593. This edition is more complete than the first two of 1593 and 1602; it was augmented by commentaries and annotations by Toulouse jurisconsults Guillaume Maran (1549-1621) and François Roaldès (1519-1589), and by the treatise De rebus bellicis, which had already appeared in the first edition of 1552. It is illustrated with more than a hundred woodcuts in the text, which are slightly smaller reproductions of the figures in the 1552 edition, many of which are based on compositions by Conrad Schnitt (c. 1500 - 1541). Good copy in antique binding. Parchment edgewear, creasing. A small ink stain and some soiling to the title, very light spotting on the edges of the first few leaves. Provenance: M. S. Cigiranni, with handwritten bookplate on title (17th century).
