Nouvelles annales des voyages, de la géographie et de l'histoire... Deuxième série. Paris: Gide fils, 1826-1828. - 65 volumes in 64 volumes in-8, 195 x 124. Shagreened basane, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (period binding). First edition of this periodical, the only one in French at the time, devoted to historical and geographical sciences and travel reports. It was published on the initiative of geographer and publicist Conrad Malte-Brun (1775-1826), one of the founders of the Société de géographie, and merchant and geographer Jean-Baptiste Eyriès (1767-1846). Their ambition was to disseminate knowledge gained from contemporary and past expeditions, providing accounts of major maritime, land and scientific expeditions. The Annales first appeared in 25 volumes, published from 1807 to 1814. In 1819, the Nouvelles annales des voyages appeared. A first series, in 30 volumes, appeared between 1819 and 1826, the year of Malte-Brun's death, followed by a second series from 1826 to 1833, also in 30 volumes, with the collaboration of Philippe Lasnon de La Renaudière (1781-1845) and Julius Klaproth (1783-1835). Five further series followed, from 1834 to 1870, the last published by Victor-Adolphe Malte-Brun (1816-1888), son of Conrad. In all, this publication, which spanned almost 70 years, comprised 212 volumes. Complete copies are virtually impossible to find. The set proposed here includes the first 65 volumes bound into 64 volumes, namely the 25 volumes of the Annales - volumes 23 and 24 being bound together and the 25th forming the Table générale - the 30 volumes of the first series of the Nouvelles annales, as well as the first 10 volumes of the second. The set includes a total of 152 plates, i.e. 58 figures, 89 maps and plans and 5 portraits. There are also 3 out-of-text tables. Two plates are in color: "Le Palais des Czars dans le Krémelin à Moscou" and "habitants de Noukahiwa". Only 5 plates are missing: Plan de l'île Helgoland (tome 3 des Annales), vue de la grande Chartreuse (tome 9 des Annales), portrait de d'Anville (tome 10 des Annales), carte de la Nouvelle Hollande (tome 24 des Annales) and Jérusalem, vue de la vallée de Josaphat (tome 9 des Nouvelles annales). With regard to the text, pages 369 to 375 are missing from the 21st volume of the Annales, and the entire end of the 25th volume, from pages 145 to 411. Beautiful set in uniform contemporary binding, from the library of Adrien de Gasparin (1783-1862), Prefect of the Rhône, Minister of the Interior (1836), Director of the Versailles Agronomic Institute (1831-1852), member of the Académie des Sciences, rural economics section (in 1840). Rubbing, spotting and some worm damage to bindings. The 21st volume of the Annales is browned with moisture, part of the title-piece is missing, and the interior shows defects caused by damp. Two loose leaves in volume 19 (pp. 327-330). Scattered brown spots in general, first and last leaves often browned by the edges of the bindings' linings. Provenance: Adrien de Gasparin, with bookplate stamp on titles.
