ESTAQUE (Jean). - Lot 122
ESTAQUE (Jean).
Xylographies.
S.l., 1989. - In-32, 89 x 80 : (40 ff.). Bound in carved and painted wooden boards, smooth burgundy calf spine, red head (Marc Ollivier - Jean Estaque).
Extremely rare collection of 35 original woodcuts, some of them erotic, by self-taught painter and sculptor Jean ESTAQUE (b. 1945), accompanied by poems by Creuse poet Bernard Blot (b. 1932).
A multi-talented artist, Jean Estaque's works belong to what is known as "folk" art, close to art brut or naive art. This little book brings together two of his skills: engraving and woodcarving. The 35 engravings are complemented by two polychrome wood sculptures specially created by the artist to serve as plates for the binding designed by Creus bookbinder and restorer Marc Ollivier.
Only 12 copies of the edition were printed, this one being one of the 4 collaborators' copies, marked A. It is the personal copy of bookbinder Marc Ollivier.
A perfectly preserved copy.
Also included:
- ESTAQUE (Jean). [Album of engravings on marbled paper]. [Creuse, 1989]. - In-16, 164 x 118 : (25 ff.). Black box, painting on paper inlaid on center front cover, smooth spine, red head (Marc Ollivier - Jean Estaque).
Probably the only collection of 25 original woodcuts by Jean ESTAQUE, printed on marbled paper and pasted on rag paper.
A very fine copy bound by Marc Ollivier, featuring an original painting by the artist on the front cover.
Provenance :
Marc Ollivier.
