Pierre LOUŸS. 5 L.A.S. Pierre" or "P", 1902-1904, to his bro - Lot 140
Pierre LOUŸS. 5 L.A.S. Pierre" or "P", 1902-1904, to his brother Georges Louis; 23pages various sizes.
Correspondence largely unpublished.
1902. - March 12. "What a miserable winter I have just spent in every respect! I won't tell you about my dark thoughts, but they haven't left me for three months. I'm barely in the frame of mind of a man condemned to death to whom someone would say: Why don't you write a little novel to keep you busy between now and the ceremony? [...] I haven't been to see anyone, since illnesses pass from me to Louise and from her to me almost without interval". Amusing gossip about Minister Baudin's cuckoldry. Revelation about Ronsard's Cassandre, "an Italian, Cassandre Salviati, born in Blois, and a direct ancestor of Alfred de Musset"... - Rameaux [March 23]. He worries about his sister-in-law Paz, questions the value of his tale published in the New York Herald. "I also send you my sonnet of the Feather which I had not dared to copy to you because of its impudence". He looks forward to Georges' return... - 18 brumaire 107 [November 9]. He rejoices at Georges' appointment to the post of Director of Consulates and Commercial Affairs: "There is no doubt that, without any effort, by accepting the posts you were offered and sometimes applying like everyone else for those that became vacant, you could have had what is called 'a very brilliant career', but today I don't regret it any more than you do, and isn't it enough that it was absolutely possible, for you to be satisfied both with yourself and with this first half of your life? [...] In your place, I'd judge it the same way; and I'm sure I would, because I've asked myself the same question. In the last three years, if I'd wanted to write six novels, organize literary trips, let my photography be published and agree to go out every night (add to that the money marriages I'm so reproached for having turned down) I'd be "brighter" today, too, and less happy, I believe. Deep down, we both wanted to keep our freedom, because there can be no question of a happy life without this word as a basis"...
1904. - February 11]. Comment on the Japanese attack on the Russian fleet at Port Arthur: "This nation has a brain of twelve years; it gives hopes like a good pupil that it is; but it is frightening to think that torpedoes are put into the hands of these precocious children"... - Tuesday evening [May]. Anecdote about sleeping cars, after a departure delayed by Louise's migraine. Account of an "interminable dream on the line 'Et quasi cursores'"...
