Gabriel-Julien OUVRARD (1770-1846) financier, munitionary to - Lot 239
Gabriel-Julien OUVRARD (1770-1846) financier, munitionary to the armies during the Revolution, Empire and Restoration. Manuscript with corrections for a supplement to his Mémoires; 409pages in-fol. Important manuscript of an unpublished supplement to the Memoirs, prepared for printing, in several distinctive hands, with numerous partly autograph corrections and additions, and passages crossed out and deleted. It is unfortunately incomplete, and paginated 27 to 138, and 152 to 430 (sometimes double-paginated; the end is missing). G.-J. Ouvrard's Mémoires sur sa vie et ses diverses opérations financières, published in 1826-1827 by Moutardier, in 3 volumes. This manuscript is later, as indicated on page 27 about his relations with Séguin: "this part of my memoirs has given rise to several observations to which I believe I must reply"... He also cites documents that came to light during his trial. In addition to his relations with Séguin, Ouvrard returns to the Bayonne markets affair, and Villèle's hostility, seconded by Champeaux, Chancellor of the French Consulate in Madrid; his relations with the Duke of Richelieu; development on the importance of Crédit Public, "cause and effect of civilization"; another long development on the South American States (with a quotation from Baring's letter of August 10, 1828), with a plan "to regulate and complete the emancipation of South America"; considerations on the role of the Banque de France... Some versos bear chapter titles: "2(bis) Afres d'Espe", "3 Rachat de l'impot français", "4 Emprunts crédit public", "10 exploitation de l'Amérique indépendante". A copy of the Mémoires (1826-1827, 3 vol. in-8, worn bindings, defects) is enclosed.
