Mazarin desk in red tortoiseshell marquetry and engraved bra - Lot 26
Mazarin desk in red tortoiseshell marquetry and engraved brass (all sides), opening to six drawers with convex fronts, and a central drawer with a concave front surmounting a flap window, the top in the Bérain style decorated with dancers, musician monkeys, mascarons, foliage and chimeras, archers, butterflies and winged victories, resting on lively, openwork uprights terminating in eight sheathed legs joined four by four by braces; (accidents).
Attributed to Nicolas Sageot (1666-1729).
Louis XIV period.
H. 78cm, W. 120cm, D. 69cm
This desk belongs to a small group of furniture with very similar marquetry, highlighted by Pierre Grand in 1993 (Le mobilier Boulle et les ateliers de l'époque, L'estampille-L'objet d'art, n°266, February 1993, p. 48-70). This small series of chests of drawers and desks clearly corresponds to one and the same workshop, according to the author, that of Nicolas Sageot. In fact, the top of our desk is identical in every respect to that of a Mazarin desk sold in 1980 (illustrated in P. Grand, op. cit., p. 62), which in turn is similar to the desk in the Royal Collections in Stockholm, stamped by Nicolas Sageot.
