Gilt bronze and mahogany Athenian, circular in shape, the se - Lot 77
Gilt bronze and mahogany Athenian, circular in shape, the sea-green marble top cut out in the center to form a perfume burner originally (mahogany lid) resting on a belt opening to three pivoting drawers released by push-buttons, supported by uprights with victorious busts decorated with palmettes and lotus leaves joined by a spacer shelf with openwork gallery, finished with claw feet and a triangular plinth; (most probably originally with a bronze lid covering the incense burner, replaced by a mahogany lid in the first half of the 19th century).
Based on a model by Charles Percier (1764-1838).
Attributed to Jacob-Frères.
Consulate period.
H.88cm, L.39,5cm
This Athenian model, designed by Jacob-Frères after a drawing by Charles Percier (Recueil de décorations intérieures, pl. 23), was directly inspired by antique tripods, and features a number of variations, notably the addition of a gilded bronze basket suspended from scrolls attached to the uprights.
As a perfume burner, the original model features an openwork bronze lid to allow smoke to escape.
Several examples have been catalogued, including one in public collections that belonged to Empress Josephine, now in the Château de Malmaison.
Among the Athenians on sale is one from the former collection of Count Clary, sold in Paris by Coutau-Bégarie on November 28, 2012, lot 365.
