Jules DEMEUR (1814-1882). 2 autograph musical manuscripts in - Lot 103
Jules DEMEUR (1814-1882). 2 autograph musical manuscripts in a collection of 6 printed scores for flute; folio, contemporary binding in green half-basin with green long-grain morocco on the upper cover, framed with gilded palmettes and the name J. DEMEUR in gilded letters (worn binding).
The Belgian flautist Jules Demeur taught flute at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, where he was principal flute at the Royal Opera for a time; in 1847, he married the singer Anne Charton (1824-1892), and from then on followed the brilliant career of his wife, Mme Charton-Demeur. Around 1840, he published two opuses with Lahou in Brussels: a Fantaisie et variations pour la flûte sur des motifs favoris de La Figurante by Clapisson, and a Fantaisie pour la flûte sur des motifs de La Somnambule by Bellini.
The collection includes six printed scores. Louis Drouet: Ma Fanchette est charmante, op.21 no.7 (with signatures of editors Terry and Simon Richault), the first 3 of his Cent Études op.31, Robin Adair op.29 (solo flute part); Jean-Louis Tulou, Concerto op.25 no.4 (solo flute part); Charles Nicholson, A Favorite Portuguese Air; T. Bucher, Introduction & Variations on Rossini's Air "Aurora che sorgerai" (flute solo).
Demeur's two manuscripts are the solo flute parts of two fantasias and variations for flute with orchestral accompaniment. They are untitled, but may correspond to the two opuses mentioned above. The first (5pages in-4, on 12-line paper) comprises an introduction and 5 variations. The second (4pages in-fol., on 16-line paper) is marked "Flute Principale"; it begins with an Adagio, followed by the Thema and 6 variations, and ends with a finale.
Provenance: collection of violinist Henri Vieuxtemps.
