André GIDE. L.A.S., [April 1901], to "cher vieux" [Eugène Rouart]; 4pages in-8. On Le Roi Candaule, premiered May 6, 1901 at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre. "Candaule won't play before May 4, but won't play later than May 6. [...] Everything's going well, but some days (last night, for example) I'm in a suicidal mood"... He'll have tickets, but he can't send them to her "because, hesitating between various theaters, Lugné hasn't had them printed yet -; then he's not in too much of a hurry to hand out seats by eye, so as to let all those who can afford it pay". Gide worries because "in the eyes of the Revue Blanche, I know very well that an author is only esteemed for what he can make in money"... He mentions the manuscript of Bonfils [a character in Rouart's 2nd novel, La Maison du bien-être], for which he has written critical remarks in the margin...
