André GIDE. L.A.S., Paris, Monday evening, [late 1902], to h - Lot 194
André GIDE. L.A.S., Paris, Monday evening, [late 1902], to his friend Eugène Rouart; 4pages in-8 (one envelope enclosed, postmarked December 30, 1904).
He begs him to excuse his silence, but they are both well, and so is everyone around him. "With age, I lead a wiser life in Paris, giving to work the time I used to spend on errands and visits. I no longer see anyone, and I'm unlearning to speak. It's to learn to write better." He did, however, attend a dinner "at your parents-in-law's, with Denis, the Descaves and your brother Louis" and visited Carrière with Maurice Denis. He leaves for La Roque "perhaps for the last time; it is with great emotion" [the property has been put up for sale]. According to Lerolle's drawing, he was able to see the Rouarts' "new home", and asks for details about the garden, the country... He mentions the superb article that Edmond Picard, to his great surprise, has just written about L'Immoraliste [in Le Peuple of November 16, 1902], and regrets that the new edition "which was due to appear in the first days of Nov. is hung up and may not appear until after January"...
