Napoleon BONAPARTE, Prince NAPOLEON (1822-1891). L.A.S. and - Lot 314
Napoleon BONAPARTE, Prince NAPOLEON (1822-1891). L.A.S. and 6 L.S., some with autograph additions, Paris, October 24-November 25, 1848, to Victor Grandjean, in Alteville près Dieuze; 7 pages in-8, 4 envelopes.
Campaigning for the election of his cousin Louis-Napoléon to the presidency of the Republic.
He sends Grandjean circulars for distribution in his district: "I have asked Vatry to write to you; it is important to counterbalance the influence of the deputies who have arrived in your area; they are subservient to Cavaignac and the coterie du National"... He also sends posters and bulletins, and urges Grandjean to "enlighten public opinion" in his department...
Attached is a L.A.S.from Vatry to Grandjean (Toussaint 1848, 4 pages in-8, envelope) portraying the candidate, whom he knows little about but who seems to him to have the best chances and to be the most suitable for the post: "He is highly educated, speaks English, Italian and German very well [...] in foreign relations this advantage and that of his family alliances can bring us many foreigners who are much less safe at home than at home [...] even if we have these bad governments, France will always get out of trouble by the good sense and honesty of the masses".... - Plus a letter from Émile Campagnole, with a receipt from Messageries for a packet of election ballots (December 1).
