Georges MOUTON, Count of Lobau (1770-1838) Marshal of France - Lot 363
Georges MOUTON, Count of Lobau (1770-1838) Marshal of France. 11 L.A.S. or L.A., and 3 L.S., Ollignies and Paris, 1816-1819 and 1826-1828, to Baron Victor Grandjean; 27 pages in-4 or in-8, 3 addresses (one letter split).
Family correspondence to his nephew and former aide-de-camp at Waterloo, in which Lobau recalls the ties that bind their two families (Victor's father married Lobau's sister) and gives news of his exile in Belgium: the birth of his daughter Caroline (June 1816), his growing daughter Louise, his hunting pictures, his tree plantations, his financial problems, and those of his wife, notably with a man named Loustau. He recalls the date of June 18, 1815, and, like the Duke of Dalmatia (Soult), awaits "authorization to return, all the more so as up to now we have had no proof of treason to reproach us with" (December 2, 1816); he would like to acquire land in Lorraine, and asks his nephew for advice. In 1818, he was finally able to return to France: "The land is returned, registration will follow and rehabilitation will come when it can" (November 26, 1819). He rejoiced at his nephew's marriage (June 1819), then at his wife's pregnancy, and planned to visit them in Nancy or Hellocourt (December 3, 1819)...
In 1826, he approved of Victor's plan to obtain a position at the Salines de l'Est, but feared he would be of little use to him.
Attached is an LS. to Charles Grandjean (June 26, 1828, 4pages in-4, cracks repaired) on his political position (he has just been elected deputy for the Meurthe): "I sit in the center of the center-left among the most commendable people", and on the subject of the salaries of prefects and general officers.
