ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) PAINTER & JEAN-JACQUES LACHENAL - Lot 24
ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) PAINTER & JEAN-JACQUES LACHENAL (1881-1945) CERAMIST - FOUNDER OF THE ATELIER DES BLESSÉS DE GUERRE CIRCA 1918 Nature morte à l'atelier (à la guitare, à la pipe et à l'As de Pique) & Nature morte aux grenades, 1922 Two circular dishes; wings slightly raised. Glazed ceramic proofs; each title design by the artist in a square cartouche in the center, treated in black and green - each wing enriched with an octagonal frame, also in green and black. A restored hair on one of the two pieces. Each dish monogrammed and dated A.M. (19)22 and signed LACHENAL on the reverse. Diameter: 22cm Important: Sonia Masson, the artist's granddaughter and member of the Comité André Masson, confirmed the authenticity of these two pieces in an e-mail dated January 13, 2025. Related work: André Masson 51896-1987) - Nature morte aux grenades, 1922, oil on canvas. Part of the collections of the Tate Modern, London (donated by Gustav and Elly Kahnweiller). The superimposition of the two still lifes forming the decor of each of our dishes is an unmistakable reference to this work, produced in the same year, 1922. The choice of representations, including that of the pomegranate, seems to lead us to a double symbolism, that of impulsive conflict and that of the world conflict of 1914-1918, recurrent among many artists of this period.
