Octave André JOINT-LAMBERT (1870-1956) - Lot 109
Octave André JOINT-LAMBERT (1870-1956) Portrait of the First President of the Court of Cassation, Alexis Ballot-Beaupré, 1905 Pastel on laid paper. Monogrammed and dated upper left. (Mould). 46 x 59 cm Framed. Alexis Ballot-Beaupré intervened at both of the Dreyfus review trials. In 1899, he was rapporteur for the request for revision and wrote: "Le bordereau a été écrit non par Dreyfus, mais par Esterhazy" ("The slip was written not by Dreyfus, but by Esterhazy"). As a result, he called for the trial that had found Dreyfus guilty to be quashed. It was also he who, on July 12 1906, gave the public reading of the ruling overturning the decision of the Rennes Conseil de Guerre, rehabilitating Captain Dreyfus. In a letter to Dreyfus, Manuel Baudoin, prosecutor at the Cour de Cassation, paid him the following compliment: "In the midst of the outbursts of all those hideous passions raging against you, [he] had the courage to stand up with all the height of his conscience, and to say the decisive word with all the authority befitting his character. It was he who restored your honor and proclaimed your innocence. All of us who are passionate about justice and truth are infinitely grateful to him" (letter dated December 26, 1911, M.A.H.J., 97.17.041.011).
