Lucien Léon Stuffel, the scribe of this Haggadah, was born in 1867 in Hattstatt (Haut-Rhin). Fleeing to Grenoble, he was later interned at the Drancy camp, and appears on the list of deportees from convoy 69 to Auschwitz on March 7, 1944. He never returned. During his lifetime, he was hazan (officiating minister) in numerous towns in Alsace and Switzerland: Berne, Lucerne, Fellering, Marckolsheim, Soultz, Bergheim, Molsheim, etc. He is also mentioned as a chohet and teacher. It seems that, like many of Alsace's hazanim, his skills were manifold, and this Haggadah shows that he also possessed the skill of ritual scribe. Although this Haggadah is calligraphed and illuminated with extreme care, it was produced on a modest notebook, with no real binding, and one can only imagine the difficulties of living as a hunted Jew in Grenoble during this period. The first roundup in Grenoble took place on August 26, 1942, and continued until the Liberation.
Sprinkled with small, naive drawings, the Hebrew text is written in attractive square script. The titles are beautifully ornamented. Ritual instructions in French are calligraphed in beautiful cursive script.
