André Derain (1880-1954) - Lot 104
André Derain (1880-1954) Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo. 1932. Poster. Lithograph. [800 x 1195]. Two-tone printing. Very fine proof on thin vellum, doubled on white vellum and canvas-backed. Two fine long horizontal folds on either side of the subject. Small light-brown spatter at left edge. Derain's first collaboration with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes dates back to 1919. Following Diaghilev's death in 1929, the Ballets russes saw their production interrupted, until 1932, when a new troupe was formed under the direction of René Blum and Wassili de Basíl under the name "Ballets russes de Monte-Carlo". The new troupe was directed by Léonide Massine and Georges Balanchine. Derain designed the costumes and sets for their first performance, La Concurrence, as well as our poster advertising the show.
