Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) - Lot 24
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963)
4 L.A.S., August-December 1955 and n.d.; 3pages in-8, and 1page in-4 (small tear to 2nd letter, with trace of adhesive).
Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat August 27: "neither I nor Michel Leiris can understand why letters and packages addressed to him arrive at Madame WeisweIller's house, where I am staying and where Leiris has never been"; he sends it all back to Leiris...
Milly December 3. "The silence came from an avalanche of letters and visits under which everything that mattered was caught. The photos are a light mass of poetry and I was wondering how to answer you. I'm still wondering. I have a mathematician's precision in my vagueness. Please say in q.q. lines your wish. God, I hate not pleasing Picasso".
Milly December 11. "Of course I'd like to help you and please Picasso - but you never tell me specific things. Is the package of photographs sent to the Palais-Royal intended to be an album? What other photographs are you talking about? My work is already suffocated by letters and margin work. Please understand that I live in the country, that I'm in constant demand for photographic works, and that publishers are afraid of these very expensive prints, which don't reach the luxury book public (they only want lithos or original engravings)".
Tuesday. "Don't worry. I'll arrange everything on the spot. Abruti de travail je vous embrasse".
Attached is a telegram from Cocteau (28.12.1955); and 7 letters from Lucien CLERGUE to Cocteau, August 29-December 28, 1955, including 6 minutes or drafts and a double carbon (21p. in-4).
CCC p. 7-14.
