Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) - Lot 35
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) 2 L.A.S., January 1957; 2pages oblong in-8 with 1page in-12, and 1page in-4 on Santo-Sospir letterhead. January 2. "The photograph of the gypsies arrives as if by miracle. Yesterday I said to my assistant: 'The document would do me a lot of good, but I don't dare bother Clergue yet'". There's no need to worry about Seghers' silence, which is "always interminable". He spoke to André Weill about the project for "sleeves for some original proofs [...] In short, be calm and work, the rest will take care of itself. There is also the terrible task of the chapel and Francine's illness, my own illness, which tore me away from Paris before I could decide anything"... With a word of apology for this "rushed" letter, but he is "overwhelmed with worries for this chapel"... January 9th. Weill "is determined to do you a favor and please me. His only fear is to upset a difficult exhibition in a gallery of books and painters. He wants it to be perfect, and he's right. I'm biting my thumbs at some of my haste. Bacchus among others, which I threw to the beasts instead of keeping in a drawer and giving away now at Marais, etc." He will "try to solve this problem of limited-edition sales covers. Find the secret of luxury sales for photographs"... We enclose 2 telegrams from Cocteau (January-March 1957); and letters from Lucien CLERGUE to Cocteau (one minute a.s., the others in double carbon), January-March 1957. CCC p. 31-34. Lots 24 to 68 were sold at provisional with possibility of reunion
