Picasso met Igor Stravinsky in 1917, and the two remained friends throughout their lives. The painter painted the musician's portrait on several occasions. A score for eleven instruments, Ragtime was published in 1919. The two men collaborated on the Ballets Russes project founded by Serge Diaghilev. In 1920, for the ballet Pulcinella, Picasso designed the sets and costumes, while Stravinsky provided the score derived from Pergolesi, inaugurating his return to a neoclassical style.
