Narcisse DÍAZ DE LA PEÑA (Bordeaux 1807 - Menton 1876) - Lot 43
Narcisse DÍAZ DE LA PEÑA (Bordeaux 1807 - Menton 1876)
The escarpolette
Round canvas
(Old restorations)
Diameter: 22cm
Accompanied by painters L. F. Français and H. Baron, Diaz visited Bougival in 1838. He stayed at the Hôtel de l'Union run by Madame Souvent, renamed La Marquise. Like other painters of modest means, Diaz adorned the walls with several works that were removed in 1901 (notary archives, Roche inventory). It was in Hauts de Louveciennes that he painted two pictures with the same subject, a woman on a swing. In one, she is dressed according to the fashion codes of the time. It adorned the fireplace in the hotel dining room. On the other, this tondo, she is a sensual woman, almost naked, with a pearly body whose singular, tempting charm Diaz "renders through harmonious stains even more than through forms" (Jules Claretie, Peintres et sculpteurs, Diaz, Paris, Librairie des bibliophiles, 1882, p. 229).
We would like to thank Rolande Miquel and Michael T. Klaa for sending us this notice and confirming the authenticity of this painting. It will be included in the artist's catalog raisonné currently in preparation.
