Signed autograph letter on the faux-title in ink: "à Stéphane Mallarmé / en hommage dévot, / Edouard Dujardin". A prelude and 6 mélopées for voice and piano on poetry by Dujardin. Dedicated to J.-E. Blanche, who engraved Dujardin's portrait for Les Lauriers sont coupés, recently published at the end of March. Provenance: [Mallarmé/Bonniot/Henry Charpentier/Paul Morel]. Paris, Mercure de France, 1919, in-12 carré br. E.O. with autograph on bl.f.: "à Dominique Braga / en cordiale pensée / Edouard Dujardin". The "Dedication" is one of the most beautiful pages of memorial devotion: "To Stéphane Mallarmé,/ The supreme intelligence with the supreme kindness,/ The noblest teaching./ No gaze was raised higher;/ No hand was more benevolently extended./ [...] Your work was your life, your word and your example, and those sweet, light-hearted chats in which you indulged. Your work was your life, your words and your example, and those sweet, light-hearted chats in which you delighted... [...] No one passed through your house without coming out better than they were, with a little more selflessness in their hearts and a little more idealism in their eyes. [...] How we listened to you / How we worshipped you! [...] Why did you leave so soon, great saint, divine friend? [...] O master, allow the one who loved you more than a father to offer to your blessed memory a dedication which, I am sure, your smiling indulgence would have accepted."
