*Stéphane Mallarmé]. La Conque. Revue littéraire published from March 15, 1891 to (1892*, on the cover), in 11 in-8 issues in ff. with yellow printed cover, flap slipcase, gold titled spine with wine-leather maroq. frame, antique pebbled paper, suede-lined interior (Roger Devauchelle). Famous little magazine edited by Pierre Louÿs: "anthology of the youngest poets, will have only twelve issues, each printed at one hundred numbered copies on luxury paper // It will never be continued or reprinted." It was to be succeeded by La Lune. Edition of [120] copies on luxury paper. *The month of completion has yet to be determined. Each to his own. Astarté, announced in the Suppl. of 11 (cf. below), came out in April 1892. One of the [20] head copies on Japon, justified "Japon N° trois" by P. Louÿs in his beautiful violet ink (printed N°). "Each issue of LA CONQUE is preceded by an unpublished FRONTISPICE in verse [in 1stp.], signed by one of the most justly admired poets of the time". "All these pieces are entirely unpublished" says the Supplement (see below). The verse frontispieces were by order: Leconte de Lisle, Dierx, Heredia, Mallarmé, Swinburne, Judith Gautier, Verlaine, Moréas, Morice, Maeterlinck (1/12/91 n° 10 Lied: "Vous avez allumé les lampes" which reappeared in Les Douze chansons illustrées by Charles Doudelet in 1896), Henri de Régnier; there was no 12th fascicule. Mallarmé had the one of June 1, 1891, 4th issue: "Éventail" [from Madame Mallarmé]: "Avec comme pour langage Rien qu'un battement aux cieux"... This sonnet reappeared in Deman's posthumous edition of Poésies in 1899. Numerous contributors, including the editors, all in their twenties, Valéry omnipresent, Gide (André Walter), Louÿs, Léon Blum, Mauclair, Quillot and others. From July 1 (no. 5), a frontispiece by Félicien Rops in etching was announced, scheduled for release with the last and 12th issue, which never appeared. As Vicaire joked in 1895: "que l'artiste n'a pas encore livré" (II, col. 927). The repository worked well, as the BN, Vicaire adds, only had the 1st fascicule! So much so that Remy de Gourmont, well-informed though he was, didn't even mention it in his directory Les Petites revues. Essai de bibliographie (P., Mercure de France, 1900). Without the specimen no. with red stamp, which features the same text as the 1st issue (it only exists on laid paper). Complete with the 2 known supplements for no. 1 (1f.) with announcements of the publication of 12 fasc. from March 15 to September 1 (sic) 1891, and no. 11 (1 f.), subscription to Astarté by P. Louÿs. In miraculously well-preserved condition, as issued, with its beautiful glazed cover in solar yellow (the color of the fin-de-siècle revival), printed in black and brown, the quires largely uncut. "vous aurez, tous, fait quelque chose de rare", says Mallarmé to Louÿs (Marchal Corr. 1518). We have located only one Japon, in the Lang sale, 2nd part, 26/1/1926 no. 477, bound by Henry-Joseph with the figure of the collector Henri Monod. Extremely rare.
