[Paul NADAR]. Photograph of Mallarmé au châle de Méry, [1895 - Lot 76
[Paul NADAR]. Photograph of Mallarmé au châle de Méry, [1895?]; 12.2 x 16.9cm. Superb silver print, mounted at the time on blank light-brown paper (without photogr.'s printed name) with full margins, fine original white molded frame. Modern cloth slipcase. Often reproduced, the Méry/Mondor proof (Bibliothèque littéraire J. Doucet) bears the delightful inscription aut.s. in pencil: "Monsieur Mallarmé s'entoure de l'affection et du châle de Méry" (cat. exhibition Mallarmé, Musée d'Orsay, 1998, p. 142, for a good reproduction of the entire sheet with "Nadar // Paris" impr. in the margin. The blank page on the photo is embellished for Méry with a charming couplet (necessarily upside down) that we never transcribed. The date 1895 is given by M.-A. Sarda, Stéphane Mallarmé à Valvins (Musée Mallarmé, Vulaines-sur-Seine, 1995, p. 33) with a reproduction of the Museum print (cf. Portraits de M., same print circa 1895, p. 82). N.B.: Ed.-H. Fischer's cat. reproduces the heliogravure from the NRF edition of Poésies, 1913 (Galantaris, 2014, p. 477-478, framed at the shoulders only). This was before the appearance of the two Mallarmé/Morel succ. proofs (Sotheby's, 15/10/2015 n° 148-49). Provenance: André Fontainas [see 73] By descent, his daughter Anne-Romaine and by inheritance Adrienne Fontainas, who authenticated the origin on the back. Attached is a long note from the latter indicating its location at Fontainas' home at 21 avenue Mozart: "on the inside of the door of the cupboard that contained his manuscripts". From his proof, he had a drawing of the head made, which he reproduced as the 2nd frontispiece of his Stéphane Mallarmé à Paul Valéry. Paris, Bernard, (1928). He offered the correspondence received from Mallarmé to Henri Mondor in gratitude for his medical devotion (Bibl. litt. J. Doucet).
