[Julie MANET?] - Lot 77
[Julie MANET?] 6 photographic portraits of Mallarmé: the poet at Valvins on his "yole", 1896-1897. 6 small albumen prints, 4 of them previously unpublished, mounted in 2 mounts under simple glass with gold-edged windows. Two published: - Le poète barrant au milieu de la Seine, voile tendue; this is the most frequently reproduced: Le Point, Mallarmé, fasc. xxix-xxx, févr.-avril 1944, p. 62; H. Mondor, Mallarmé Documents iconographiques. Genève, Cailler, 1947 pl. XLVII; M.-A. Sarda, Stéphane Mallarmé à Valvins (p. 17); and Portraits de M. p. 78. - Mallarmé in 3/4 bust (Portraits de M. p. 78). The others are unpublished, except in the Sotheby's cat. If the probable early attribution to Julie Manet, for whom Mallarmé became guardian on the death of her mother Berthe Morisot in 1895, proves accurate, the dating can only refer to the years 1896-97 during her stays at Valvins, after her photographic apprenticeship with Degas in 1896 at the age of eighteen. As early as October, Mallarmé asked him for prints of the house and the "boat alone" for an album to be compiled, as well as of the "crew of the S.M." [his initials on the skiff]. [his initials on the skiff] with Natanson and his wife Misia on the shore (Marchal Corr. 2731), again mentioned in our letter to the girls of November 2 (see next no.). These precious prints have certainly passed, but they would be virtually the only ones known of the poet's favorite pastime on his "forever literary skiff" (P. Valéry). Enclosed are 4 reprints of the preceding photos, 5 old prints of Valvins (house, interior, tomb), and 4 portraits of Dr. Bonniot and his second wife (?) by Paul Nadar and Eug. Pirou. Provenance: Mallarmé-Morel no. 154 (for the 6 of the skiff) specifying: "each laminated on period card, 4 of which are marked Épreuve obtenue avec l'Express Détective Nadar on verso" and no. 179 for the miscellaneous.
