Vojislav Jakic grew up in poverty after the loss of several family members. Gifted at drawing, he created portraits of the deceased from identity photos for the families in his village. Trained briefly at the Belgrade School of Fine Arts, he returned to Despotovac. During the 1960s, he intensively produced drawings, first in small formats, then very large ones from 1969 onwards, using ballpoint pen, wax and gouache. His work, marked by solitude and pain, develops a singular, obsessive graphic universe.
