HORBOCH (Guillaume) - BERNARDUS DE BOSQUETO.
Decisiones Rote Nove et Antique cum additionibus casibus : dubijs et regulis cancellarie apostolice : nuper diligentissime recognite & a me[n]dis expurgate.
Lyon: Jean Clein for Étienne Gueynard, September 24, 1519. - in-4, (10 ff.), cclxxxvi ff., (9 ff.). Tan basane, cold fillet framing the boards, ribbed spine, speckled edges (17th century binding).
"Baudrier, XI, p. 219.
Rare edition printed in Lyon in Gothic type on two columns by Jean Clein for Étienn Gueynard.
This collection of canon law is divided into three parts. The first contains the 493 "decisiones novae" collected by Guillaume Horboch (c. 1320-1384), who was a doctor of canon law at the universities of Avignon and Bologna, and a member of the tribunal de la Rote, one of the three courts of the Roman Catholic Church. The 887 "decisions antiquæ" follow. From folio ccxi onwards are the decisiones of Bernardus de Bosqueto (13..-1371), jurist in canon law, auditor at the Roman Rota, bishop of Naples and cardinal from 1368.
Title printed in red and black, including a frame and passe-partout vignette designed by G. Leroy, the latter having been used by Gueynard in several of his publications. It is repeated on folio a1 recto, also printed in red and black, with another frame. Each decisiones begins with an attractive woodcut lettering.
This is the fourth edition published by Étienne Gueynard, following those of 1507, 1509 and 1515.
A copy in a sober 17th-century binding. A few rare notes and reading notes are present in the margins, sometimes slightly trimmed by the binder.
Binding skilfully restored, first white endpaper missing. Some foxing and wetness. Some wormholes, notably in the upper margin of leaves xcvi to cxvii, with damage to a few letters. Top margin a little short, with occasional damage to running title.
Provenance: old signatures on title."
