Frédéric DUBOIS (active in Paris and Russia 1780-1819) - Lot 47
Frédéric DUBOIS (active in Paris and Russia 1780-1819) Presumed portrait of Pauline de Coriolis Espinouse, half-body toward the left, in a pleated white dress with high waist and black belt, a leopard-print shawl over her right shoulder, her long hair up with a comb, a lock falling over her left shoulder. Miniature signed lower left: Dubois On the lid of an ivory box lined with tortoiseshell. Provenance: coll. Giscard d'Estaing. Frédéric Dubois made his debut at the Salon de la Correspondance in 1780 with a pastel portrait of the young Prince de Craon, before devoting himself to miniature painting, a field in which he quickly acquired a great reputation. He appeared at the Salon du Louvre from 1795 to 1804, and is represented today in most major miniature collections. A label and three papers, two handwritten and one typescript, preserve the model's identity inside the box: "married in 1779 to César Amable de Demadolx. A precious family memento". Charlotte-Geneviève-Pauline de Coriolis de Villeneuve d'Espinouse, born in 1756, married the marquis César Amable de Demandolx la Palu in Aix-en-Provence in 1779. At the time of this beautiful miniature, painted around 1800, she would have been around 40-45 years old. She could be another Pauline from this family, where this first name is common, perhaps Charlotte-Angélique-Pauline-Julie de Coriolis Espinouse (1767-1822), who married Etienne Nicolas Damour in Marseille in 1797. The miniature would show her around the time of her marriage. Minor damage to the box and rabbet. A CIC will be issued, allowing circulation within the European Union.
