According to the owner, the work came from the collection of Włodzimierz (Vladimir) Bugiel, dispersed in the early 2000s by his son, Jean Bugiel.

The sculpture is based on the subject of an 1895 painting, now lost. We know that there were 4 "Parisian" proofs executed before 1901 - Szymanowski mentions them in a 1901 letter to T. Axentowicz.
