ANDRÉ-ALETH MASSON (1919-2009) Organic form Sculpture. Platinum-glazed ceramic proof. Height: 14.5cm - Length: 19cm - Width: 15cm Bibliographyand related works: Thomas Leporrier -André-Aleth Masson -céramiste peintre sculpteur - Éditions TL, Paris, 2011. Our work can be compared with the organic totems reproduced on pages 214 to 217. André-Aleth Masson's work could be summed up by his identity as a "painter-plastician". Initially trained at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Masson's predilection for ceramics led him to continue his studies at the École de formation artistique de Fontcarrade in 1947. His research as a potter focused on a production attentive to pure forms and very imposing, almost architectural volumes. His works, animated in space, seem to breathe through their volumes; they are often characterized by an asymmetry that in no way detracts from the purity of the lines. His subjects are always abstract, both in form and decoration: a skilful use of engobe enamels gives them a very typical mirror effect, or bright hues. His luminous palette is reflected in the geometric and graphic decorations that sometimes enrich his ceramics, particularly dishes and bowls. His acute sensitivity to volume later led him to turn to other mediums. Remaining first and foremost a potter, from the 1960s onwards he turned in parallel to sculpture, painting, engraving and the creation of architectural panels. Masson and André Borderie (1923-1998), close friends (the latter encouraged the former to settle near his home in Senlis), collaborated on numerous murals and were members of the Mur Vivant group, founded by architect Maurice Novarina - both artists presented works at the salons organized by this association in 1969, 1970 and 1972. André-Aleth Masson's entire output is marked by his interest in the plasticity of forms - on walls, on canvas or in space; also infusing his work as a ceramist.
