Henry GAZAN (1887-1960) - Lot 101
Henry GAZAN (1887-1960) Pile ou fesse, La Marche rampée...pour présenter les plus petites cibles possibles aux vues de l'ennemi, 1915 Ink and watercolor. Signed and dated upper right. Label on back "29 Moreuil / Gazan Henri Sergent / EM 72 D.I /S.P. 157" . 29.5 x 22.5 cm This drawing was published in "Le Rire Rouge" on May 22, 1915 under the title "Les Rampards de Bochland". For caricature historian Laurent Bihl, quoted by Bertrand Tillier in "Cartes postales illustrées en guerre (1914-1918)" (CNRS Editions, 2021, page 164), this way of depicting the enemy by his hindquarters alone is the ultimate stage of dehumanization.
