A student at the Saint Petersburg Academy, Tiemm continued his training in Paris from 1843 to 1846 in Horace Vernet's studio. He accompanied him to Algiers and then returned to Saint Petersburg, where he worked as an illustrator and lithographer for the Russian newspaper "Russkij Khudozhestvennyj Listok". In Berlin, he worked as a painter on Majolica.
In 1845, Tiemm portrays Horace Vernet, not in his studio on Rue des Martyrs, but in Versailles, when the latter is working on the decor for the Galeries Historiques commissioned by King Louis-Philippe.
