Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) (after) - Lot 41
Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) (after)
Lady taking her tea. About 1740, engraved by Filloeul. 310x275mm. Bocher 13. Fine proof on laid paper, carefully washed. Minimal foxing. Traces of glue around the verso. Small margins.
The original painting was exhibited at the Louvre in 1739, under the title Une dame qui prend du thé. It is now in the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow.
"The resemblance between the model of this painting and that of the Lady Sealing a Letter, two years earlier, has often been remarked upon. Both wear the same dress. This model has been seen as Marguerite Saintard, Chardin's wife. She died on April 13, 1735, two months after the painting was completed". (Pierre Rosenberg, Chardin 1699-1779, exhibition cat., Paris, Grand Palais, RMN, 1979, p.218). Madame Chardin's 1737 death inventory lists a "tayère en terre de Flandre" in her bedroom and a "table de cabaret", a small tray with raised edges on which cups were placed, both of which are found in this painting.
