The Draftsman. 1757. Engraved by J. J. Flipart. 218x335mm. Bocher 14. Fine proof on laid paper, trimmed on or outside the plate, complete with shelf, carefully washed. Small fracture in the tablet, skilfully restored on verso. Narrow margins on three sides.
The original painting was exhibited at the Louvre in 1759, along with its counterpart, Une ouvrière en tapisserie. The booklet describes them as follows: "Two small Paintings one foot high, seven inches wide. One represents a young Draftsman: the other a Girl, working in tapestry. They belong to M. Cars, Graveur du Roi." There are various versions of this subject, one of which is in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Kimbell Art Museum.
