Very fine proof on strong ivory wove paper watermarked "Van Gelder Zonen", numbered and signed in pen and ink. Very slight oxidation at the edges of the folio. Very short crease broken in lower left corner. Full margins [465x318mm]. Edition of 30 proofs. Provenance: Henri Marie Petiet (1894-1980). "In this plate, he depicts himself engraving in the manner of Rembrandt in his famous 1648 print [...] Like Rembrandt, he looks up from the plate he is engraving to scrutinize the viewer." (P. Deparpe ed., Matisse et la gravure; l'autre instrument, Milan, Silvana Editoriale, 2015, p.121).
