Large white porcelain Buddha statuette, Dehua, China, 20th c - Lot 10
Large white porcelain Buddha statuette, Dehua, China, 20th century, attributed to Xu Youyi (1887-1940) He is shown standing, with a serene face and half-closed eyes, expressing a meditative attitude. The hair is in small, regular curls, topped by a cranial protuberance (ushnisha). The figure is dressed in long monastic robes with soft, flowing folds, starting from the shoulders and falling elegantly over the body, wrapping around the arms. The left hand is presented forward, holding a pearl, while the right hand points downwards in karana mudra. The figure rests on a stylized, finely modeled cloud base. On the back, two molded seals, one inscribed in a truncated Dehua double-gourd - 德化. The other in a Xu Yuyuan zhi square - 許裕源製 Height: 50 cm Missing two fingers on the right hand, firing fels on the back and underneath, minor wear and small glazing defects. The four-character square seal Xu Yuyuan zhi ("Made by Xu Yuyuan"), molded on the reverse of the statue, is attributed to the famous potter Xu Youyi (1887-1940) and his porcelain workshop Yuyuan. Xu Youyi, also known by his courtesy name Jinyong and his nickname Yunlin, descended from a line of woodcarvers going back several generations. He learned the art of porcelain carving from Su Jinxue (1869-1919), another Dehua master potter. His reputation rested on his ability to fuse the techniques of clay modeling, wood carving and porcelain sculpture in a single work, giving rise to an innovative style in Dehua porcelain statuary. Most of his masterpieces bear one of the following marks: Xu Yunlin zhi, Xu Yunlin or Xu Yuyuan zhi.
