Henri MARTIN (1860 - 1943) - Lot 219
Henri MARTIN (1860 - 1943) Sketch for Autumn - Triptych of Life, 1903 Charcoal and stump. Titled and signed lower right. 28.5 x 18.5 cm In 1903, Henri Martin created a triptych for the Toulouse town hall: Spring, Summer and Autumn. Representing the same corner of nature in different periods, characters and feelings, these compositions evoke the three ages of life. The triptych was particularly well received by the critics. In La Revue de Paris, Romain Rolland wrote of the 1903 Salons: "The memory of this year will remain, in my opinion, attached to that of a great work, which will perhaps be a milestone in the history of our painting: the triptych by M. Henri Martin for the Capitole de Toulouse. It's a truly admirable work, the likes of which French painting hasn't produced since Puvis de Chavannes. In some respects, it even marks a step forward. It represents a new step from the great idealist and decorative art towards reality". Our drawing is preparatory to L'Automne, which today adorns the Salle Henri-Martin in Toulouse's Capitole building. Bernard Marcel described the work in the following terms when it was presented at the 1903 Salon des Artistes Français: "A rusty autumn landscape, an old woman, her body tired, cramped and bent, leading a little goat to graze.... A house can be seen in the distance, a melancholy shelter for the coming cold, for the bad days to come". (La Dépêche, April 26, 1903).
